"Sorry" Sculpture By Gemma Garcia





SORRY

Nine months working with this Sculpture....

Her name is "Sorry" and this sculpture has so many levels of metaphoric meaning... 
The relation with Frida:

Ftida is Mexican, so, the name of "sorry" is, because I want to say sorry to  the Mexican people...( like Australia did to the Aboriginal people). I am Spanish, and the Spanish people, we robbed (long time ago) to the Mexican people gold and we invaded their culture. So, Sorry in name of the all ESPANOLES!

Also, the sculpture has a link with Frida's life, The sculpture is pregnat (she never could had babies), the flowers that Frida was wearing all the time in her hair, I transferred to the dress, also Frida was writing a Diary, My sculpture has a Diary (altered book) with drawings of Frida's paintings, with a broken ceramic heart...

The link with of the "sorry" sculpture with my personal process:
The Frida's ceramic face has not mouth, like all my artworks (due my difficulty with the English languaje), but, because I think Frida was telling all the time the truth, I permitted her to talk between her chakra....


The complete sculpture body is created with a lot of letters (paper) how she did to Diego, I was writting to her severals letters, during the construction of the sculpture...

Frida shape is a "Koala" why? Because it is my way to "integrate" a sculpture of my vision of a Mexican artist in Australian, being Australian!

The Lethbridge Gallery has established a strong reputation for exhibiting works demonstrating exceptional detail and creativity. With the intention of fostering the next generation of artists, Lethbridge Gallery initiated the Lethbridge 10000.

Now in its sixth year, this exciting art competition was open to national and international artists for small-scale artworks. Entrants submitted paintings, drawings, photographs and all 2D artworks up to 61cm (24 inches) in any direction.
The judging is based on three equally evaluated criteria of creativity, originality and skill with
$10 000 awarded to the winner.
